 1) Hauptstadt des Unionsterritoriums Pondicherry, Indien, an der Koromandelküste, 203 100 Einwohner; katholischer Erzbischofssitz; Universität (gegründet 1985); Baumwollindustrie; Hafen.
 
 2) Unionsterritorium in Südindien, 492 km2, (2001) 970 000 Einwohner, Hauptstadt ist Pondicherry. Das Unionsterritorium besteht aus vier Gebietsteilen: An der Küste des Bundesstaates Tamil Nadu liegen Pondicherry (293 km2) und Karikal (160 km2), an der Küste von Kerala liegt Mahe (9 km2), an der Küste von Andhra Pradesh liegt Yanam (30 km2). Sprachen sind Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam, Französisch und Englisch. Die Landwirtschaft erzeugt Reis, Baumwolle und Zuckerrohr; Konsumgüterindustrie. In Pondicherry liegt Auroville, die 1968 unter Beteiligung der UNESCO angelegte Stadt, in der die Menschen nach den Ideen von Sri Aurobindo zusammenleben können. - Das Gebiet von Pondicherry wurde Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts von der französischen Ostindischen Kompanie erworben. Durch einen französischen-indischen Vertrag (1. 11. 1954 kamen Pondicherry, Karikal, Yanam und Mahe, bis dahin Teil Französisch-Indiens, zur Indischen Union und wurden am 28. 5. 1956 zu einem Territorium zusammengefasst; seit 16. 8. 1962 Unionsterritorium.
